here are a few screenshots :

Tips & Trick (10 ways to improve your multimedia skills)

1. Learn the Importance of the Sketch

Sketching is one of those things that every artist MUST do and do often. Sketches don't have to be perfect, nor do you have to show them to anyone. The purpose of a sketch is to quickly illustrate or develop an idea you have, to capture or study some form of reference so that it can be worked on at a latter date. Because of this, the sketch only needs to convey the right information to you and you alone (unless you are drawing an idea out for a client then the message needs to be crystal clear). It may contain lighting, camera movement, composition, camera angle, etc.

2. Draw, Draw and Draw Some More!

This is a similar tip to the first but what I mean by this is draw anything that comes to mind or visually interests you, try to love drawing ! The more you draw from your mind and from reference, the better you will become and the quicker your skills will develop. Take the time to learn what is life drawing or analytical drawing, well of course if you decide to enlist in art academy you will be taught for sure, but if you're not, then you need to, at least know what are they.

3. Build a Reference Library

This is a great tip that I learned from years back. As you begin to fill sketch books with illustrations of ideas and reference material, you should build up that stack of books with more books. By this I mean buying art books, books on clothing, guns, tanks, other cultures, animals etc. The list of what you should look into is endless and should extend beyond your general interests. But it mustn't stop there. You should also collect images off of the internet and save them to your computer and organize them correctly. Take photos of things you see if you don't have time to sketch them. The purpose is to have a nice big collection of images that inspire you, inflame your imagination and, more specifically, if you need to draw something right, having the material there to draw from will add realism and clarity to your work.

4. Explore and Elaborate Different Mediums

This is when you take an idea from sketch to final painting. Exploring other methods of creating that end piece can really yield some unexpected results and challenge you to push yourself further into new situations. Playing with different types of paints such as oil, acrylic, water colour or gouache are the options most people would suggest trying, but there is more than experimenting with these. You could try air brushing, pastels, using charcoal or taking the leap into the digital realm. All these different mediums have their strengths that you can harness but you will never know them unless you try them out.

5. Know Some Colour Theory

This is a big one. Colour theory is a massive, massive subject and I can't do it justice here. What I would strongly suggest is investing time and money in a good colour theory book and learn from that. Even learning only a little bit, will help your work massivley. The more you push yourself to learn, the better and better you will become. Do you know that color is one of 6 elements of design ? It's really important that you know and realize when, where, how to apply what color in your design.

6. Play With Perspective (Composition)

What I mean by this is take the time to learn about vanishing points, 2 point and 3 point perspectives and how to create objects in three dimensions correctly. As this is just a tip, I'm not going to go into the details here but there are numerous books and places on the web that cover this important area. Learning the rules of perception will open up the possibilities of what you can draw and will broaden your artistic horizons greatly. It will actually improve your point of view, that there are a lot of angles that can be exploited to make your product more impressive.

7. Hunt Down Your Artistic Weaknesses & Destroy Them!

By knowing what your not good at artistically and making a conscious effort to attack it (them, could be lots of things), will enable you to systematically grow. For instance, if you draw a lot of humans but avoid drawing feet because you know your not that good at it, set aside time to draw lots of feet, over and over again until they look right (just be sure not to get a foot fetish). This links to a previous tip I did of Draw, Draw and Draw Some More! Drawing things that you don't draw often or at all will increase your repertoire and will enable you to paint and illustrate more complex pictures.

8. Ask For Help & Critiques

I heard this one from numerous sources and I have to say that this is something you don't have to do all the time. Joining online art communities and forums will give you access to professionals who do know their stuff and can really help you improve, but having thick skin is advised. At one point or another, you will get some harsh and unfair comments but that is the risk of being an artist who puts art out for viewer consumption. Never be afraid to ask for help, they will gladly help you, because the true artist are man who wants to share their knowledge.

9. Develop an Original Style

Ah, a real tough one this as developing your own style takes time and experimentation. By exploring lots of little different mediums and genres, you'll soon get to know what you like and how you like to do things. Over time, by doing things the way you want and in the subconscious way you approach a painting, a style will emerge that will be recognizable and more importantly, it will be your style.

10. Learn to Accept Failure as a Positive Thing.

Possibly one of the most important lessons an artist (or almost any professional) can learn. Not every picture you create will come out looking the way you wanted it too and the same goes with any experiment to try out. There is no such thing as a bad result... there are just results. Learning to take something positive out of everything you do will change the way you look at you next piece and how you approach it. If something doesn't work or you don't like it, don't do it again or use it as a bench mark to launch yourself from in your next piece.

Do You Know ? (After Effect)

Do you know that After Effect w/o plug-in can produce something spectacular, only with simple key animations such as 3dslayers, opacity, anchor point, etc ?

For example, this motion graphic is done for my project in the past, called "Ngukur Jalan". It's done with just simple key animation as i already mentioned above.

Keep this in mind, Everything complex always starts with simple things.

Tips & Trick (3dsmax rendering)

1. Do you know that 3dsmax rendering can be lightened by closing some "useless" processes in your taskbar right in the low-corner of your desktop ?

2. Eliminating some other processes in your task manager - processes can be done if you really know what to close. Don't just close any process you don't know about because it can be stressful when you close windows's process.

3. Thing's just get easier if you don't use any themes for your desktop. I prefer to use low-memory-cost theme such as : windows 98/ME theme or just default themes.

4. If you want to test your render, you can make your image output smaller, e.g : 640 x 480 px or even smaller !

5. Cover your renderer's setting. Try to watch / learn on how to set your renderer, e.g : For Mental ray, there is image sample on renderer tab, you can make it smaller (default is 1/4) for just pre-render task.

VFX Easy or ?

Most people chose to side with

"As long as I review a lot of VFXs, I can do it"

Who are you to talk this big ? Even VFX engineer has to go through process step by step, experiment on the same thing, undergone a much more stressful than you can imagine

"It's easy, take your time in front of your PC and start doing"

It's not that easy, you need to have through a lot of experiences and practicing. And just for your information, it's more COMPLEX and stressful than a simple desk job.

Even if VFX is just only for a few seconds, the process behind it could be hours, days, months and even years !! All the VFX teams are doing the same thing on and on, they give their best to attract their target audiences.

If you think you can't do VFX, learn and start from now.

If you think you can do VFX, try your best to make something new, be motivated, be creative all the time !!

3dsmax do and don't

1. ALWAYS use both hand and shortcuts !
2. ALWAYS save your project in the particular folder(s)
3. ALWAYS have a back up yourproject.max when you're working on project(s)
4. ALWAYS save your file before you make another st...ep e.g : skinning, rigging, animating, etc
5. ALWAYS plan for your project before you work (how many polygons, objects, etc)
6. DON'T use your mouse for clicking buttons which have their shortcut !
7. DON'T run other programs which is useless and make your memory low
8. DON'T forget to set your renderer (mental ray, vray, etc) before rendering
9. DON'T render .avi directly from max, render in .tga instead

Do You Know ? (God of War III)

First comes the idea! "Our director Stig decided he wanted Helios to go down in an epic fashion, with his head being ripped off. Then comes the execution. We had the animation department create the head rip and eye bulge. Then character art modeled some guts and we used some shader tricks to get the ripping effect to happen. The fx department added the blood and the rigging guys put the whole thing together.”

Creating a usable set of tools in Maya was the first challenge to meet before even beginning to model. “When the studio started, we decided to use Maya and make it our editor. All of our tools are in Maya. We have five technical artists and three tools programmers who are dedicated to creating tools for the artists, designers and animators. Each department has their own toolboxes to maximize workflow. We use Maya’s particle systems, its rigging/animation system and key framer. We’ve created a CGFX shader that utilizes the hypershade and renders in the perspective window. Pretty much any feature that we have on the PS3 renders in Maya and what doesn’t, we have live linked with Maya attributes. Our Programming Team created an entity system in Maya that uses connections and scripting similar to other game engines and editors...

Do You Know ? (G.I. JOE)

Do You Know that G.I. JOE used for almost 124 VFX for that movie alone ?

And that they SPENT, yes, SPENT a lot of money for CRUSHING cars ? I mean, REAL cars, not CG cars..wow...

Tahukah kamu film G.I.

Maksudku, mobil BENERAN, bukan mobil CG alias mobil palsu..wow..

Do You Know ? (Ironman)

"Do You Know ?" is a new feature in this page, containts news, tips & tricks, and other issues around CG / Multimedia.
"Do You Know ?" adalah fitur baru di halaman ini, berisi berita, tips & tricks, dan informasi2 seputar dunia CG / Multimedia.

So let's get started.

Do you know that Ironman movie used at least 1000++ PC just for rendering purpose ?
In this industry, they call it a RENDER FARM.
Just for 1 frame (1 second = 25 frames) it took around 8 hours to render. Can you imagined how long this "Ironman" character show up in that movie alone ? Hmmm.....

Hmmm.....

Some software infos

When we talk about Multimedia, we often to ask "what is it exactly ?", and if we focused on Indonesia, Surabaya especially (since ranimation studio is in Surabaya), many people don't understand the word "Multimedia"..how sad...

OK, some tips for beginners :
1. Do know what is your purpose in doing design (what design, who's you client, who's your target market, what product, etc)
1. Cari tau tujuanmu apa dalam mendesign (design apa, sapa clientnya, konsumen/pasar, produk apa, dll)

2. Do know how to achieve. This concerns of what software(s) to use.

3. Do practice and learn a lot of softwares, improve your software skills, don't be lazy and pretend you're the one.

Those 3 points above refers to your software knowledge. So i'll breakdown the softwares which practically used in most production house in Indonesia especially (don't compare Indonesia to Hollywood)
1. Adobe Photoshop. This software often used for arranging images, retouch photos, posters, even simple animation (the output is .gif).
1. Adobe Photoshop. Software ini sering digunakan untuk mengatur image, retouch foto, bikin poster, sampai animasi simpel (hasilnya berbentuk .gif)

2. Adobe Illustrator. This software is used for making illustrations, vector art, and any other vector-based images.
2. Adobe Illustrator.

3. Adobe Premiere. This software is used for arranging video, capturing video, and render video.
3. Adobe Premiere.

4. Adobe After Effect. This software is used for making motion graphic (e.g : MTV bumper, title, etc), animating still images and is compositing software.
4. Adobe After Effect.

5. Macromedia/Adobe Flash. This is a hyper-super-duper excellent interactive multimedia software. Can be used for website, presentation, game, slides, 2D animation, etc.
5. Macromedia/Adobe Flash.

6. Macromedia/Adobe Dreamweaver. This is a twin of Flash. Can be used for making website, compositing images and turn it into website.
6. Macromedia/Adobe Dreamweaver. Ini kembarannya si Flash. Digunakan utk membuat website, dan meng-komposisikan jpeg dan mengubahnya jadi website.

7. Macromedia/Adobe Director. This software is used for making a touch screen become interactive ! If you ever wonder how can you make a touch screen presentation, this is your answer !
7. Macromedia/Adobe Director.

8. Autodesk 3dsmax. A 3d-based software for making 3d animation, architecture, etc.
8. Autodesk 3dsmax. Sebuah software berbasis 3d untuk membuat animasi 3d, arsitektur, dll.

9. Autodesk Maya. A twin of 3dsmax, often used for animation purpose.
9. Autodesk Maya.

Well, those are some Multimedia softwares which you can look and try, and hopefully you guys can develop a new, hidden talent in multimedia design !

A good news to those who lives in Surabaya, because you can have a multimedia courses with acceptable price @ Vectorscope, School of Creative Technology. For more infos can ask me here.
